ANTIQUE FRENCH CABINET PLATE SIGNED COBALT BLUE CRUST GOLD GILT RIM BOUCHER

Regular price $225.00

French Porcelain Cabinet Plate c. 1910 with pastoral scene, hand painted scenery around central transfer painting with outer cobalt band with raised "crust gold" ornamentation and gilt edge. Excellent condition with great colors. From around 1910. 10 1/4 inches in diameter. Backstamped with gold Fleur de lys, maker unknown. Outstanding condition with no chips, cracks or crazing.

Based on a pastoral scene painted by François Boucher in 1759, titled La Marotte (La Musette), which can be seen in the Louvre in France. The artist's name and the date of the original painting are visible in the barrel the young man is leaning on. The 1759 date is the date of the original Boucher painting, not the plate. You will see many of these plates inaccurately listed as having been made in 1759. Boucher did not make plates. Any examples of this plate were made around 1895 to 1915, 150 years after his death, making it difficult indeed for him to sign one.

We have seen two variations of this plate. The original La Marotte in the Louvre depicts the young man on the left side of the scene, as does this plate. There is also a version with the scene flipped horizontally. Several of these exist.
